Good conversion efficiency is 95% or above. Conversion efficiency can be determined using the method here. IFAIK, BS does not calculate conversion efficiency. Take everything out, light brush scrub for anything stubborn and a good rinse and I'm done.Rereading your OP, I see you mentioned mash efficiency, which BS calculates for you. Hook up my pump and hoses and recirc on 120 degrees for an hour. I do a light rinse, fill with water, a scoop of PBW and any equipment I need to submerge. Multiple hands makes it go smoother, hanging with drinking buddies and cleanup in half the time.ĮDIT EDIT: Also. if you have other brewing friends, a larger machine allows you to brew a 15 gal batch and split it between 3 people. and get a brew bag! My personal advice would be go ahead with the 18 if you are in the market. I can still do my normal 5g batches in the 18 and dont have to worry about overflowing my 10.5, which I've gotten REALLY close to doing with multiple batches. The 18 is bigger in diameter but only about 3-4" taller, so it still fits in the garage under my workbench. As far as size goes, there's not as big a difference between the two machines as it might seem. Anytime I want to brew something big I have to go over to a neighbor's 20 gal system so hefty stouts, barleywines, etc are out on the 10.5 unless you want to add time to your brew day with a reiterated mash, and even then the efficiencies aren't as nice. (NOTE: the 18 will only brew on 220!!!) Ironically, I'm doing my first DIPA this weekend on the 10.5 and trying out a reiterated mash since its a bigger beer at 8%. I've loved the 10.5 and made sure to put a 220v outlet in my garage to brew. I've been using the 10.5 now for about 2 years and just bought the 18 on Black Friday special. I’ll use the money I saved to buy some of the other equipment I need. But I feel like I couldn’t go wrong with either one. With all the advice from everyone my choice went back and forth all day. Plus my long term plans probably involve a bigger system but I can still use the 10.5 after or sell it or gift it to one of my kids. So if I only have 110 out there I’m still okay. One of the main reasons is that I may potentially have problems running 220 to my balcony where I’ll brew. I think the number of pluses for each was almost equal.
